Built for the Birds
Before we got started building birdhouses, we wanted to learn exactly what nesting birds need in their seasonal home. Here are some important things we found out:
- If the house gets too hot, it can harm the birds.
We use brilliant white exterior latex paint to reflect heat away from the home and protect the wood from the elements. - Paint can be bad for birds.
We do not paint the birdhouse interior or entrance hole. Fledgling birds may peck at these surfaces and could ingest paint chips. - Perches are dangerous to baby birds.
Our birdhouses don't have perches for a reason: they give predators something to hold onto when approaching the entrance hole. Perches also invite undesirable invasive species to nest. Besides, birds that will use nest boxes don't need a perch to enter or exit their home. - Splinters can harm baby birds.
Our birdhouses are carefully sanded to remove splinters from the interior and entrance. - Pole mounting the birdhouse deters predators.
Predators have a more difficult time climbing a pole than a tree trunk.
